In fact, it was Leonie's twin sister who was head over heels in love with Hal, and to spare her unnecessary pain, Leonie was ready to go to any lengths to keep the young lovers together - even if it meant beguiling and bewitching the intimidating Hawk. Jun 09, Mareli rated it liked it. This book was not bad at all but it had something I didn't like it so much. First of all there was the ick feeling I got when I discovered both father and son were in love with twin sisters, slightly older than the son and 14 years younger than the dad.
Besides this book is full of things, drugs, kidnap, domestic violence, blackmail, sometimes it was like those south-american telenovelas where something is always happening and I was almost expected that someone suddenly would stand up saying " I am your mother!
View 1 comment. Whoa this book was much twistier than expected! Much longer and containing quite a few more plot threads than your usual Harlequin novel. Tragic past, stalkerific ex, kidnapped baby, secretly insane person, drug addict, it had a little of everything! A goulash of OTT drama ingredients, yet the overall impression was kinda bland and mild for all that.
I still liked it but I wouldn't say it was mind-blowingly unforgettable. You get more of the Hero's point-of-view than the heroine's, interestingly Whoa this book was much twistier than expected! You get more of the Hero's point-of-view than the heroine's, interestingly enough.
The thunderclap realization of love strikes him pretty early, too, but don't worry there are plenty of momentous events that keep the crazy train chugging away. I have to say, while the ensuing disasters, revelations, and twists were entertaining enough, the romance was pretty unexciting after the initial tension of will-they-get-together was settled so early.
Spoilers ahead! So it's already complicated she'll be her own sister's stepmother-in-law! She has problems loving her new baby because she already lost a baby son when her ex-husband brutally raped her late in her previous pregnancy. Speaking of whom, the scumbag ex is blackmailing her for money by threatening to claim parentage of her new bastard daughter.
So it's all knotted up already but just for fun let's throw in some unspeakably horrible trauma from her past: her family was involved in a car accident on an abandoned country road when she was young, and both her parents were crushed and died agonizingly slowly in the presence of her and her twin. Her mother screamed for a long time before becoming a dead body. Their father talked himself hoarse for three hours trying to comfort them before dying himself.
But wait! There's more! Their beloved family dog was in the car and he was splattered in front of them too. So the girls were trapped in the car with the dead bodies of their parents and dog for hours before finally being found. Then, because this is not tragic enough, they got split up afterwards and raised with different sets of relatives. So both twins have some baggage, and her sister gets her own small plot thread.
So does the H's personal assistant and his son, as well as the heroine's housekeeper. You get a storyline! And you get a storyline! The big bump in the road happens when the new baby daughter gets kidnapped, and that was pretty exciting! The potential suspects: 1.
The twist of whodunnit was actually fairly unexpected. You'll never guess who the kidnapper is! You'll totally guess because I said you'll never guess! I won't confirm it though. Okay fine, it was the secretary who turns out to be far from the competent, sophisticated lady she seems. In fact she's a psycho obsessed lunatic who thinks of the H as hers. If this had been a 5-star read I wouldn't have told you because I'd want you to read it yourself, but it wasn't that great so if you don't want to read it I didn't want you to eternally wonder.
I enjoyed this re-read a couple of decades after reading it for the first time. A case in point, Hawk Sinclair, a hero who was flawed and quite miserable for most of the book, but, once he got over himself and decided to try to redeem himself became a memorable hero that I have looked for in romances I have read since. The hero I enjoyed this re-read a couple of decades after reading it for the first time.
The heroine was self-sacrificing to the extreme, surely no woman exists who is such a paragon, but if Hawk loved her the way he did, I have to give it to her, for being so perfect for him. Overall, I loved this book, it could not have been more packed with plots layered over other plots, so many potential villains yet such obvious ones too. Of course the worst thing that can happen, did happen, with baby Holly being kidnapped by a mental case, perhaps the biggest reason why as a reader I will never read such a plot device in my books again.
Not if I know that they are there. I loved CM's writing when I was younger, she was daring for me, would I read her books now? Probably not, but I would recommmend this read to anyone who likes to explore the world of romances as they used to be written not so very long ago. View all 7 comments. Jun 01, LLC rated it liked it Shelves: books-on I liked all the characters in this book but it had too much going on.
There was a wicked ex-husband, there was blackmail, a kidnapping, and a secondary character with a drug addiction. The h had six cats all named for flowers which was fun.
The relationships are all a little confusing and wierd. Leonie and Laura are identical twin sisters. Laura marries Hal and Leonie marries Hawk who is Hal's father. That makes Leonie a step mother-in-law to her twin sister. Holy Twists and Turns, Batman! Prepare for one helluva ride. I looked at the reviews before I decided to get this book. This book too me by surprise. And it was wonderful! His father is not pleased that his son wants to marry an older woman and storms her house t Holy Twists and Turns, Batman! His father is not pleased that his son wants to marry an older woman and storms her house to warn her off his son.
Then the predictable happens and the H the father realizes he has the hits for the woman he kept describing as looking like a child. That really disturbed me The spend a night together, he insults her in the morning. She ends up pregnant.
