EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES TOM ROBBINS PDF

When I was 17, my friend snuck me into a club in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. A girl wearing a fur coat and impossibly tall Demonia platforms eyed me. When she asked my favorite book and I said Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk , she grabbed my face. The first read electrified me, made me fall in love. More importantly, I felt represented in this novel: here was a queer, disabled heroine.

Robbins gets his omnibus going with the story of Sissy Hankshaw a poor Virginia girl who uses her outsized thumbs to become a hitchhiker's legend and the rest of her body to star in fern. Thomas LeClair teaches contemporary fiction at the University of Cincinnati.

Robbins, the novel's narrator. When the Great Mother reigned, so did magic. Sissy has it in her seductive thumbs, and the cowgirls are turned in the right direction: female community, sexual play, life among animals and plants.

The novel, though, turns every which way, becomes a Miibius striptease. Sissy is made for levitation, not analysis, yet here's Robbins talking about piano wire and his own costume. Once again, it's the man up front. Empty spaces are filled with inventions—a lost Indian tribe called the Clock People is his best—and theories on everything from vaginal odor to time and the universe as play. They add up to a primitivism just pragmatic enough to he attractive and fanciful enough to measure the straight society.

Some of Robbins's metaphors are only embroidered Kleenex. But when he has hyperbole on medium, metaphor transforms the ordinary into the fantastic. The first half has most of this textural magic; by the end, action and abstracdominate. Tom Robbins is one of our best practioners of high foolishness. Archives Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.
